How To Load a Van Safely

Transporting goods safely using a van needs a little more thought. Proper loading technique helps you to maximise space as well as decrease the risk of getting your goods damaged during a move. Here is how you can safely load a van.

Load Items That Are Large First

Loading bulky items such as kitchen appliances and drawer units will allow you to fit your smaller things around them and help you to make use of the space you have efficiently. Since large items are usually the heaviest items, this can be an excellent way of preventing damaging your fragile items by crushing. Also, heavy items should be evenly distributed across your van floor surface, ideally across the most structurally sound areas. Make sure that long items, shelving or mirrors are secured along the wall of the van.

You Should Distribute the Load Evenly

You should always load your items in rows starting from the back of the van space to the front and utilise all the space inside and under the items, such as chairs, to help in restricting the movement of any unwieldy small item. Make sure you dismantle all the large items, especially tables; this will help in lowering the centre of gravity of all the top-heavy items. Also, this is likely going to make loading and unloading them easier. For the same reason, make sure you don't stack the load too high. Don't exceed the load capacity of the van - it is set for a reason.

You Should Create a Barrier Between Your Load and Yourself

Even if you have made sure that your load is secured, there's always a risk of your items moving about on the road. If your items move, you have to protect yourself from getting hit by any of them (whether large or small) that could fly towards you. You can easily put netting, mesh or even a strong piece of plywood in place and create a separate compartment for goods.
