Tips When Moving House
- Make Sure You Pack Early
The time it'll take for you to pack your stuff depends on their number. You should start packing early; for a large house, 2 months is enough if you are packing one box every day. For smaller houses, a month is fine.
- Start with the Rooms that You Least Need
It makes sense packing the items that you do not use every day first. For instance, seasonal items you are currently not using like Christmas lights, coats and garden tools.
- Finish Packing One Room Before Going to the Next One
This is going to help you be organised and it'll later show the movers or anyone who is unloading where each box should go.
- Declutter
Give the old items that you do not want to charity or hold a garage sale. Also, eBay is another option. If you have friends assisting you to move, ask them if they want anything you are planning to sell as appreciation for the help.
- Don't Exceed the 20kg limit for a Box
One of the boxes may not withstand the weight or you can even end up getting a back injury. Pack items that are heavy in small boxes and those that are light in large boxes.
- Label All Your Boxes
Use a marker to write the things packed in each box. Don't write on the top of the boxes, instead, write on the sides. Also, use a different colour for each room. If you have kids, ask them to help you because all kids love colouring and drawing. It will help them to cope with the stress of moving.
- Fill Empty Gaps
Use packing newspapers, old rags or old newspapers to fill any gap in the boxes. This will secure your items for the ride.
- Put Boxes that Are Heavy on the Bottom
Put heavy boxes below the light ones as this will make sure that your breakable items won't get crushed during the process of moving.
- Dispose of materials that are hazardous - Most moving companies don't transport hazardous materials.
- Prepare Your box of essentials - This can include a tool box, first aid kit, baby supplies, pet food, toiletries, eating utensils, can opener and much more.
